Sonnet

Dance onward to the rhythm of my drum,
stand burnished in the bronze sunlight of day,
let the shadows sweep your soul by the way
of the iris and star it has come from;
jump at the chance to move to purplish lore
as a magician would saw you in half,
as the mane of a horse flies by the staff,
come back from the brink of what made you poor.
Stand, hands above, and hail the royalty
we come to this place assuming to meet,
we wait, standing for hours, shifting our feet—
stare at the voice, it commands loyalty:
lilting as the sunlight on the feathers
of great birds, flying into the weather.
